Fares and road notes on this page reviewed July 30, 2026.

This is the shortest dham drive from any of our base cities to any dham, full stop — Dehradun to Janki Chatti runs direct through Vikasnagar rather than looping via Rishikesh, and it is genuinely under seven hours. If you have flown into Jolly Grant, Yamunotri is the fastest full dham darshan you can build into a short trip.

The road

Where you actually stop

Via: Dehradun → Vikasnagar → Katapatthar → Naugaon → Barkot → Janki Chatti
Vikasnagar

Where the route leaves the Doon valley and turns for the hills.

Katapatthar

Small hill junction on the direct road to the Yamuna valley.

Naugaon

The road meets the main Yamuna valley route here.

Barkot

The standard overnight halt, 45 km short of Janki Chatti.

Janki Chatti

Where the road ends. The 6 km trek to Yamunotri starts on foot or pony.

From our drivers: Because this route is so much shorter than the others, it is the one dham that genuinely works as a fast 2-day trip from Dehradun — up to Barkot, trek day, back — if that is all the time you have.

Rules of the road up here

Hill routes in Uttarakhand run on rules that catch first-time visitors out. None of these are ours — they are the administration's, and they shape how the trip has to be planned.

No night driving on hill routes

Vehicle movement on the Char Dham roads is banned between 10 PM and 4 AM by the district administration. We plan every pickup so you reach your halt in daylight — anyone promising to drive you through the night is planning to be stopped at a checkpost.

Green Card and trip card

Every commercial vehicle on a Char Dham route needs a Green Card (a fitness certificate specific to hill driving) plus a trip card for the journey. Ours are current on every vehicle we send. Without them you get turned back, usually at Rishikesh or Sonprayag.

Yatra biometric registration

All four dhams need a biometric registration before darshan. It is free and done online at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in, or at the counters in Haridwar and Rishikesh. We do it for you as part of the booking if you send us your ID details.

Three generations travelling together, and the pacing was right for all of us. Oxygen was on the vehicle and we needed it once, at Kedarnath, and it was there in under a minute. They arranged proper Tamil vegetarian food at two hotels on request, which I did not expect this far north.

Six days, all four dhams. One flight was held two hours for cloud at Kedarnath, which is nobody’s fault, and the team kept us updated and rebuilt the next day’s schedule to make it up. Four stars only because the Dehradun hotel on night one was the weakest link.

Solo woman traveller and I was honestly nervous. They put me with a small group of other solo pilgrims and a guide who checked in without hovering. Guptkashi hotel was clean and warm, food was simple and good. Going back for Badrinath next season.
