Yamunotri

Dham
First Dham · Source of the Yamuna
⛰️ 3,291m📏 201 km + 6km trek📅 Day 2

The first of the four shrines, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. Reached by a 6 km trek from Janki Chatti — on foot, pony or palki.

✨ Places to visit & things to do
♨️
Cook rice at Surya Kund
Pilgrims tie rice in cloth and dip it in the boiling hot spring as prasad — a ritual unique to Yamunotri.
🙏
Divya Shila darshan
Touch the sacred rock pillar before entering the temple.
🐴
Pony or palki up
The trek is steep; ponies (₹1,500–2,500) and palkis make it doable for everyone.
📌 Good to know
  • 6 km trek each way from Janki Chatti
  • Temple opens ~April 19 (Akshaya Tritiya)
  • Surya Kund water is genuinely boiling — handle with care
💡Local tip: Carry the rice-tying ritual cloth from below; it is the photo and memory everyone keeps.

Kedarnath Route Map — The Segment Everyone Asks About

The Kedarnath leg is the only part of the circuit with a mandatory trek, so its route deserves its own line. From Haridwar the road runs Rishikesh → Devprayag → Srinagar → Rudraprayag → Tilwara → Agastyamuni → Guptkashi → Sonprayag (235 km). Private vehicles stop at Sonprayag; a shuttle jeep covers the 5 km to Gaurikund; and the final 16 km to the temple is on foot via Jungle Chatti, Bheembali and Lincholi — or 8 minutes by helicopter from Phata/Sersi/Guptkashi. Coming from Gangotri on the full circuit, you join this road at Guptkashi via Ghansali instead of driving back through Rishikesh. The one navigation mistake pilgrims still make: following an old map to the pre-2013 Rambara trail. That route no longer exists — the rebuilt trail crosses to the true left bank of the Mandakini after Bheembali.
