Fares and road notes on this page reviewed July 30, 2026.

Coming down from Badrinath is a longer day than most people expect, because the descent is not faster than the climb — the same 320 km, the same gradients, and the same single-lane stretches with a bus coming the other way. What changes is the pressure at the far end: you have a train from Haridwar or a flight from Dehradun the next morning, and ten to eleven hours of mountain road between you and it. That is why the departure hour decides this journey. Leave at six and it is a long but ordinary day; leave after lunch and you are halting at Rudraprayag whether you planned to or not.

The road

Where you actually stop

Via: Badrinath → Joshimath → Pipalkoti → Chamoli → Karnaprayag → Rudraprayag → Devprayag → Rishikesh → Haridwar
Joshimath

Forty-five km down and 1,200 m lower. The obvious place to split this drive if you would rather not do it in one.

Pipalkoti

A kinder altitude again, and the fallback halt when the gate timings have cost you the morning.

Karnaprayag

The Pindar confluence, and roughly the point the road stops feeling high.

Rudraprayag

Where the Kedarnath valley joins. Reliable food, and the last big halt before the run to Devprayag.

Devprayag

The Ganga begins. Most people stop here on the way down even if they did not on the way up.

From our drivers: Settle the departure time the night before, not on the morning. Badrinath gate timings and the 10 PM to 4 AM hill movement ban between them decide whether this is a one-day descent or a two-day one, and both are easier to plan around than to discover.

Rules of the road up here

Hill routes in Uttarakhand run on rules that catch first-time visitors out. None of these are ours — they are the administration's, and they shape how the trip has to be planned.

Mountain roads, not highway hours

This is a hill run outside the Char Dham corridor, so none of the yatra paperwork applies. What does apply is arithmetic: average speed on these roads is 25–30 km/h, not the 60 a map will assume, and the last stretch is single-lane in places. We quote the honest driving time rather than the optimistic one.

Cancellation, in plain terms

Cancel free up to 48 hours before pickup.

Plans change, and a 10–11 hrs mountain drive is the kind of thing weather rearranges. The Badrinath–Haridwar booking runs on the same terms as every other cab we send out.

We do not take payment online. Most bookings run on a small advance over UPI and the balance to the driver at the end of the trip, so there is rarely anything to refund. Full cancellation terms.

Eight of us, including my parents at 72 and 69. Palki was arranged for both at Kedarnath without any fuss. Ramesh bhai, our driver, was calm on roads that frightened me and knew every tea stop worth stopping at. Ground-floor rooms at every hotel, as promised.

The price I was quoted in February was the price I paid in May. After what I read about agent markups, that alone was worth it. Badrinath darshan was handled well and Tapt Kund before the 4:30 AM slot was something I will remember for a long time.

Priya MehtaPune · Do Dham 6N/7D · May 2026 Verified traveller

Three generations travelling together, and the pacing was right for all of us. Oxygen was on the vehicle and we needed it once, at Kedarnath, and it was there in under a minute. They arranged proper Tamil vegetarian food at two hotels on request, which I did not expect this far north.
