Haridwar to Joshimath cab
Fare, distance and the road itself — written by the people who drive it.
A retired Indian Army officer who founded Shiv Ganga Travels in Haridwar in 2010 and pioneered the zero-commission model for Char Dham operators here. About us
Fares and road notes on this page reviewed July 30, 2026.
Joshimath is the town every upper-Alaknanda plan runs through, and the 275 km up from Haridwar is the drive that gets you there. It is nine to ten hours past all five Prayags, and it is worth understanding that Joshimath is not a compromise stop on the way to Badrinath — it is where the ropeway to Auli starts, where the Hemkund and Valley of Flowers road head at Govindghat is 22 km away, and where the Badrinath gate timings are managed. A great many itineraries that call themselves Badrinath trips are, in practice, based here.

Where you actually stop
The Ganga is born here, and the drive is still on easy road.
Kedarnath traffic peels off left; you carry straight on up the Alaknanda.
The Pindar joins. Roughly the halfway mark by time, not by distance.
The kinder-altitude fallback halt if the day has run long.
The junction — ropeway station, Narsingh Temple, and the road on to Govindghat and Badrinath.
Rules of the road up here
Hill routes in Uttarakhand run on rules that catch first-time visitors out. None of these are ours — they are the administration's, and they shape how the trip has to be planned.
This is a hill run outside the Char Dham corridor, so none of the yatra paperwork applies. What does apply is arithmetic: average speed on these roads is 25–30 km/h, not the 60 a map will assume, and the last stretch is single-lane in places. We quote the honest driving time rather than the optimistic one.

Cancellation, in plain terms
Plans change, and a 9–10 hrs mountain drive is the kind of thing weather rearranges. The Haridwar–Joshimath booking runs on the same terms as every other cab we send out.
We do not take payment online. Most bookings run on a small advance over UPI and the balance to the driver at the end of the trip, so there is rarely anything to refund. Full cancellation terms.
What our passengers say
Eight of us, including my parents at 72 and 69. Palki was arranged for both at Kedarnath without any fuss. Ramesh bhai, our driver, was calm on roads that frightened me and knew every tea stop worth stopping at. Ground-floor rooms at every hotel, as promised.
The price I was quoted in February was the price I paid in May. After what I read about agent markups, that alone was worth it. Badrinath darshan was handled well and Tapt Kund before the 4:30 AM slot was something I will remember for a long time.
Three generations travelling together, and the pacing was right for all of us. Oxygen was on the vehicle and we needed it once, at Kedarnath, and it was there in under a minute. They arranged proper Tamil vegetarian food at two hotels on request, which I did not expect this far north.
