Fares and road notes on this page reviewed July 30, 2026.

Joshimath — officially Jyotirmath since 2023 — is the hinge of the whole upper Alaknanda valley. Badrinath, Auli, Hemkund Sahib and the Valley of Flowers all hang off this one town at 1,890 m, and there is no way to reach any of them without passing through it. That makes it the most useful halt on the Haridwar–Badrinath drive: ten to eleven hours from Haridwar is honest driving time, and stopping here turns a punishing day into two civil ones. It is also where Badrinath gate timings are managed in peak season, so an overnight here is often what gets you an early slot rather than a mid-afternoon one.

Driving to Joshimath, in practice

Mountain roads, not highway hours

This is a hill run outside the Char Dham corridor, so none of the yatra paperwork applies. What does apply is arithmetic: average speed on these roads is 25–30 km/h, not the 60 a map will assume, and the last stretch is single-lane in places. We quote the honest driving time rather than the optimistic one.

Three generations travelling together, and the pacing was right for all of us. Oxygen was on the vehicle and we needed it once, at Kedarnath, and it was there in under a minute. They arranged proper Tamil vegetarian food at two hotels on request, which I did not expect this far north.

Dr. Ganesh IyerChennai · Char Dham 11N/12D · June 2026 Verified traveller

Six days, all four dhams. One flight was held two hours for cloud at Kedarnath, which is nobody’s fault, and the team kept us updated and rebuilt the next day’s schedule to make it up. Four stars only because the Dehradun hotel on night one was the weakest link.

Vivek AgarwalMumbai · Char Dham by Helicopter · May 2026 Verified traveller

Solo woman traveller and I was honestly nervous. They put me with a small group of other solo pilgrims and a guide who checked in without hovering. Guptkashi hotel was clean and warm, food was simple and good. Going back for Badrinath next season.
