Fares and road notes on this page reviewed July 30, 2026.

Rishikesh is where the Ganga leaves the mountains, and where the Char Dham highway properly begins — every dham route passes through it. People arriving by cab are usually coming for one of three things: a yoga or meditation course in Tapovan, a rafting weekend, or the start of a yatra the next morning. The drive up from Delhi is 240 km of expressway and then twenty minutes of river, which is why so many groups skip the train and simply book a car. One practical note: vehicles cannot cross either suspension bridge, so an address on the far bank means a short walk at the end.

Driving to Rishikesh, in practice

Mountain roads, not highway hours

This is a hill run outside the Char Dham corridor, so none of the yatra paperwork applies. What does apply is arithmetic: average speed on these roads is 25–30 km/h, not the 60 a map will assume, and the last stretch is single-lane in places. We quote the honest driving time rather than the optimistic one.

Booked after comparing four operators. What sold me was that the person who answered the phone was the person who ran the trip. Hotels, vehicle and darshan slots were exactly as quoted. The Kedarnath trek support was the strongest part — our guide walked at my father’s pace the whole way and never once made it feel like a problem.

Rajesh KumarGhaziabad · Char Dham 9N/10D · May 2026 Verified traveller

Eight of us, including my parents at 72 and 69. Palki was arranged for both at Kedarnath without any fuss. Ramesh bhai, our driver, was calm on roads that frightened me and knew every tea stop worth stopping at. Ground-floor rooms at every hotel, as promised.

Sunita SharmaJaipur · Senior Citizen Char Dham 12N/13D · April 2026 Verified traveller

The price I was quoted in February was the price I paid in May. After what I read about agent markups, that alone was worth it. Badrinath darshan was handled well and Tapt Kund before the 4:30 AM slot was something I will remember for a long time.
