Quick answerA Tempo Traveller in Haridwar costs ₹24 per km on outstation trips and ₹4,500 for a local day of 8 hours and 80 km, plus a flat ₹300 per night driver allowance on outstation runs. It seats 12 or 17 seats, plus the driver and takes roof carrier plus a rear boot — the only vehicle we run that takes a full group’s luggage without anyone holding a bag. Booked direct from our own fleet — there is no aggregator commission inside these numbers.

Fares and road notes on this page reviewed July 30, 2026.

A Tempo Traveller is what a group of eight or more actually needs, and it is the vehicle most people underestimate. The 12-seat version is the yatra standard — push-back seats, a roof carrier that takes the luggage a Char Dham trip generates, and enough headroom to stand up in at a halt. The 17-seat is the same vehicle stretched, and it is the one extended families and temple groups book. What matters more than the seat count on a Uttarakhand hill route is that the vehicle is a hill-registered Tempo with a current Green Card and a driver who runs the Char Dham roads every season, because a long-wheelbase vehicle on the switchbacks above Rudraprayag is genuinely a skill and not a formality.

What it costs

Tempo Traveller rate card, Haridwar

The four numbers that decide a hire bill — the day slab, the extra kilometre, the extra hour and the outstation per-km rate. Most operators publish the first and let you discover the other three.

VehicleSeats8 hr / 80 kmExtra kmExtra hourOutstation /km
Tempo Traveller 12-seat12₹4,500₹26₹300₹24
Tempo Traveller 17-seat17₹5,500₹30₹350₹28

2026 season rates. The 8 hr / 80 km day is a slab, not a target — whichever limit you cross first starts the extras. Outstation trips add a flat ₹300 per night driver allowance; night running between 10 PM and 6 AM adds ₹300 to a local booking. Every one of these numbers is on the page before you book, which is the entire difference between us and a call-centre quote.

Who books it

What a Tempo Traveller is genuinely good for

Groups of 8 to 17

Below eight people an Innova Crysta is cheaper and more comfortable per head. Above eight there is no sensible alternative.

Char Dham circuits

The luggage a ten-day yatra generates does not fit anywhere else. The roof carrier is the whole argument.

Temple sanghs and joint families

One vehicle keeps the group together, which matters more than most organisers expect on a route with this many halts.

Airport and station group transfers

Delhi or Jolly Grant to Haridwar in one vehicle rather than three cabs that arrive twenty minutes apart.

Before you book

When not to book a Tempo Traveller

Every operator will tell you what a vehicle does well. These are the cases where we would put you in something else, including the ones where that earns us less.

It is slower on the hills than an SUV, and on the Kedarnath and Yamunotri approaches that difference compounds into an hour or more a day.

Some narrow stretches above Sonprayag and towards Janki Chatti are genuinely tight for a 17-seat body. We will say so at the quoting stage rather than at the diversion.

A half-full Tempo costs the same as a full one. If your group is nine, look hard at whether two Ertigas suit you better.

Both sizes carry a valid Green Card and trip permit for the Char Dham routes. On the high approaches we fit oxygen as standard above 2,500 m, which on a 17-seat group is not a small consideration.

No surprises

Booked after comparing four operators. What sold me was that the person who answered the phone was the person who ran the trip. Hotels, vehicle and darshan slots were exactly as quoted. The Kedarnath trek support was the strongest part — our guide walked at my father’s pace the whole way and never once made it feel like a problem.

Eight of us, including my parents at 72 and 69. Palki was arranged for both at Kedarnath without any fuss. Ramesh bhai, our driver, was calm on roads that frightened me and knew every tea stop worth stopping at. Ground-floor rooms at every hotel, as promised.

The price I was quoted in February was the price I paid in May. After what I read about agent markups, that alone was worth it. Badrinath darshan was handled well and Tapt Kund before the 4:30 AM slot was something I will remember for a long time.
